
CHALLENGE:
Virtual surgical simulation and training presents tremendous potential benefits, but is accompanied by technical and didactic challenges. It’s not just the ‘wow’ factor that increases retention when training in VR, but the consistency of experiences providing an environment in which learners can fail safely. As technology innovators, we wanted to set the standard for surgical training performed within a safe, consistent, immersive virtual environment.
TRANSFORMATION:
The INVIVO Surgical Simulations experience was created to be a visual and technical showpiece, highlighting our depiction of a typical operating room environment in virtual reality. The simulator draws upon our expertise in the medical device space, from modeling fully interactive large-scale medical imaging devices to smaller hand tools requiring care and dexterity. Designed to use the latest generation of virtual reality hand controllers, including HTC Vive and Oculus Touch, the room-scale environment allows users to navigate seamlessly between surgical stations, and interact with medical devices in intuitive, repeatable ways.
RESULT:
INVIVO Surgical Simulations gives a glimpse of where we see the medical device and surgical space going in the future—a future defined in part by our innovations.
